My work is an immediate response to the coastal landscape, mainly Sussex but also from my travels around the British coastline.Using drawing, working in the location allows a direct and intuitive interaction with forms, shapes and colours of the sea and coast. Rather than dealing with the whole landscape I focus upon certain elements that grab my attention. This could be an outcrop of rock, protrusions, under lying structures, marine architecture, fragments or a fleeting moment. The drawings are later reworked away from the setting. A process of re organising, layering and mark making. I attempt to instill a sense of place, exploring the memory of the experience.I'm drawn to empty beaches, rocky coast lines, cliffs and erosion alongside sea defences, buidings and marine industry. The coast provides a constantly shifting source of inspiration.
